"Helping a woman give birth is incredible job"

I work in the birth centre at Queen’s Hospital. My role as a midwife is look after women throughout labour and initially after they give birth.

Today women have lots of of choices on how they can give birth this can include anything from self-hypnosis and birthing pools to epidurals, drips and operating theatres. I must ensure I accommodate individual plans and requests, which is interesting!

Helping a woman birth a baby is the most incredible part of my job.

My advice to anyone considering a career as a midwife would be to get some work experience. I had two week-long work experience placements at my local maternity unit and saw what a midwife does. I also had the chance to ask all the burning questions I had.

"It's so rewarding to know you have helped someone"

I am an adult nurse. Adult nursing covers all fields of healthcare ranging from neo natal care to end of life.

What I love most about being a nurse is being able to see the transformation in patients from when they arrive on a ward to when the go home. It is so rewarding to know that the care I have provided has helped them.

I also love the variety of the work, you never know what you’re going to see next. You are treating different people with different needs every day and that makes the job really exciting.

Nurses are a vital front line team member and doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team are always seeking your input and advice.
